An update on our little boys

These little boys are a joy! They keep us on our toes for sure, but we often comment on how utterly boring our lives would be without them! For them, having a brother so close in age is just so much fun. You always have a play mate, you essentially get two birthdays a year (because you share all your gifts), and you get to stay up too late talking and laughing every night (until mom and dad come in and make you go to sleep).

So, what are our two little guys up to these days? Well, they are adoring their baby sister, of course! These guys love love love their new sister. They shower her with kisses almost incessantly. John Hudson talks about how he is going to protect Clara and take care of her. They often have to be reminded to be gentle, but overall they are so sweet with her. Daniel always alerts me when Clara is crying..."Clarwa screaming, Mommy!" (As if I didn't notice...)

John Hudson is a little boy who loves to dress up.  And he usually ropes Daniel into playing along. Each day, getting dressed is the very first thing on his mind and he has often planned his outfit the night before. And his outfit changes throughout the day, depending on what he is. For example, a basketball boy cannot be dressed like a workman. A police man cannot wear mail man clothes. A teacher cannot wear worker man socks, etc. We spend a lot of time changing clothes, but thankfully he can almost fully dress himself now (We're just working on putting all the unused clothes away...).  John Hudson also likes to dress like people he admires. His new thing is asking Daddy to leave a note by the coffee every morning telling John Hudson what he is wearing (down to the socks and shoes). Many days, JH dresses just like Daddy and eagerly anticipates Daddy's arrival home so he can show off his matching attire. He also loves dressing like GaGa when they're together. He consults GaGa every night before bed as to what he will be wearing the next day.

John Hudson loves to look up costumes online. He will ask if we can look up pictures of say, a trolley driver. Then he will study the picture for awhile, disappear into his closet, and then reappear dressed strikingly similarly to the picture he just saw. He really has a knack for creating costumes. The other day he asked to look up pictures of "Story Time Readers" because we had just gone to story time at the library. I told him story time readers don't normally have uniforms :)

Daniel is as cute as ever. Just one look at him will make anyone s-m-i-l-e! He just enjoyed his second birthday! He spent the entire week singing "Happy Birthday" to himself and eagerly anticipating his dinner of "Spaghetti and Strawberries and Cream," which he thought of entirely on his own! We had a blast at his family birthday gathering. We got him a tiny balance bike and he has turned into quite the little speedster on it!

Daniel is also talking like crazy. He definitely says anything he wants to say. I guess having an older brother to imitate has really helped his verbal skills. One of my favorite things is listening to Daniel say what he is thankful for each night during our family Bible time. He says the sweetest things! A few examples.."I kankful for playing in the hose" (When we haven't played in the hose in about two months) or "I kankful for my blanket and boo-paci" or "I kankful for power went out" (during a recent storm). It's so neat to see how both boys process the day and pull out things to be thankful for!

Daniel still loves his paci (which he calls boo-paci for some reason unbeknownst to us).  He actually prefers to have three boo-pacis at a time, one to suck, one to hold and one to rub in his eye. Weird, I know.  He would have boo-paci all day, every day if we let him...but we don't. He can have his boo-paci only at bed time and nap time now, and he's doing a great job with that.  Sometimes though when the house is too quiet, I'll go into their room to find Daniel in the corner furiously sucking boo-paci, just waiting to be caught!

Daniel has also taken over John Hudson's love for hats. He has one hat in particular that he wears at some point every single day. The teachers at our Thursday morning Bible Study always comment on his hat (which he wears almost every week). I love it when my kids like to wear cute things :)

This was our first car ride with three kiddos...

These boys bring us so much joy. At the end of each day, we are tired. So, so tired. Yet we still sit around for half an hour talking about all the cute things the boys did that day. We just can't get enough of them! Thank you, Father for entrusting these little men to us. May they grow to love You and reflect Your light to the world around them. Amen!

Maternity Family Photos

About two months before Clara was born, a sweet lady approached me at church and told me she was a photographer and would love to give us a photo shoot as a gift. Now, if you know me, I've always said I would never get maternity pictures...because I just feel like when you're hugely pregnant and swollen, no picture will be super flattering.  But, at the same time...who can turn down free pictures!

Well, this sweet lady was a complete GIFT from God! She took the most amazing pictures! Not only that, but she created an atmosphere of fun, comfort, and adventure. She knew how to capture the boys' personalities even when they weren't cooperating with our efforts (hah). She made us all feel at ease and really caught the essence of our family.  I am SO thankful for these pictures. And now, to look back and know that it was sweet Clara in my belly...oh so special. If your family has any photography needs, please check out Sarah Jordan Photography. You will be blessed!

Thank you, Sarah for capturing these precious moments! We are so grateful for your generous gift!

God has added

Its hard to describe the darkness that pervades the days following a miscarriage. Tears fall at the least expected moments--seeing a baby commercial on television, hearing a whimper in the doctor's office, seeing a new mom at the grocery store--they all remind you of the baby you don't have. I remember sitting in the bathtub one evening weeping. Michael poked his head in to check on me and I said, "I just miss her so bad..." How can you explain missing someone you've never met? In some ways you feel foolish to cry and carry on. But at the same time, you know your baby was real and more than that, it was your baby. And with that realization, how can tears be anything but appropriate?

Its been just over a year since our baby went to be with Jesus. I still think of her so often. My heart aches to think of who she would have become and what a joy she would have been to our family.

But Praise be to God! In His gracious goodness and mercy, He has given us another baby to love. Clara Josephine Schulte was born on August 31, 2017. She has been such healing balm to my heart and such a JOY to our family.  We chose not to find out the sex of the baby before birth and let me just say--BEST surprise of my life!!! I'll never forget that moment when she finally came out and I got that first peak and screamed, "Its a girl!!!" at the top of my lungs. Oh so sweet.

Its a really strange thing knowing that we wouldn't have Clara if we hadn't lost Jubilee. We love Clara more than words can say, yet we miss Jubilee every day. Its a mystery how our hearts can feel both emotions so strongly. There are so many things in life we don't understand--and yet we know that Jesus Christ is perfectly sovereign and He does all things well. In that knowledge, there is much peace.

I know God doesn't always give another child after a miscarriage. Sometimes we have to rely on Him to heal our hearts in other ways, while our arms always ache to hold that little one. We are immensely grateful that God chose to entrust us with another life after He chose to take one away. Blessed be His name.  We chose the name Clara after my great grandmother and also after the dormitory I lived in at Berry when Michael first started pursuing me. Also because Clara means "Clear, Bright"--which is exactly what we pray for our sweet girl. That she would be shining light for Jesus and clearly reflect His nature to the world around her. Josephine is after the main character in my favorite novels Little Women and Little Men--Josephine March. She is a lovely character with such a beautiful mixture of strength, grit, and tenderness. Josephine also means God will add. We praise Him for adding this precious girl to our family. May we be faithful to point her back to Him.
